Field note · Union Springs Scenic Site
A source, seen from above.
Look down and the spring appears: a short boardwalk and dock reaching over clear green water where groundwater rises to the surface. The Michigan DNR describes Union Spring as the state’s second-largest natural spring, and it protects 160 acres around it as a dedicated natural area. White-cedar swamp surrounds the pool and the stream that leaves it.
From the trail the spring is a quiet pool at the end of a walk. From the air it reads as a point of origin: one bright opening in an unbroken canopy, with the rounded hills of the Porcupine Mountains folding away on every side.
This was the opening image of the exhibition in its first, flattened form. Here it is restored to a sphere, so the spring sits at the center of its own world again.
