Three subtle energies: what water actually carries.
Beneath chemistry, Schauberger posits a layer of near-immaterial, high-frequency energies — ethericities — that healthy water accumulates and diseased water loses. He sorts them by function into three families.
Fructigens
The energies of fructification — germination, reproduction, upward growth. Negatively charged, "eternally female," concentrated in cool sediment and riverbanks; activated by cold and in-winding motion, they drive the fertility of soil and vegetation.
Qualigens
The energies that generate quality — the difference between chemically identical waters that nourish or merely hydrate. Qualigen builds when ripe, cool water meets draining groundwater; it is what spring water has and tap water has lost.
Dynagens
The amplifiers of immaterial energy — water's living charge. A mountain stream carries dynagens for kilometres; iron grilles and turbines discharge them. The emptied water then "eviscerates" the soil to replace them, tearing its own channel apart.
Together they explain his oddest engineering rule: never judge water by molecular formula alone. Two water samples can share the same defining molecule yet differ profoundly in dissolved cargo, temperature, motion and handling history.
How to read a claim that names three invisible energies
This is the threshold of the codex's contested country, so it is worth being explicit about method. The ethericities are not measurable. No instrument detects a fructigen; no experiment isolates a dynagen. By the standards of physics, the three -gens are not a theory — they explain everything and predict nothing falsifiable, which is the signature of a framework outside science rather than within it.
And yet dismissing them outright misses what makes Schauberger interesting. Strip the invented nouns and each "energy" can be read as a placeholder for a real property that water systems genuinely have. This is an interpretive translation: he was naming effects he observed without distinguishing their modern mechanisms — and the naming, however mystical, tracked something true. The honest move is neither to believe in the ethericities nor to sneer at them, but to ask: what real property was he pointing at, and does it exist?

Decoding "fructigens": the one that decodes best
The third is left until last because it is the most surprising. Fructigens is the vaguest of the three as Schauberger states it — "the energies of fructification… negatively charged, eternally female, concentrated in cool sediment and riverbanks… they drive the fertility of soil and vegetation." Read as mysticism it is the weakest of the trio. Read as a description of something he had watched, it lands almost exactly on a real and central property of soil.

None of this means fructigens exist. Cation exchange is electrostatics acting on ions in a soil matrix, not an energy that water accumulates and carries; the hyporheic zone is a habitat, not a reservoir of subtle force. And his gendering of it — "eternally female" — is imported metaphysics with no referent whatsoever. What the decode establishes is narrower and more interesting: he was looking at the right places and describing the right variables, and had no vocabulary but this one. The three-way carving holds. The three substances never existed.
Where a word like "ethericity" comes from
Encountering the ethericities cold, they read as one eccentric's private invention. They were not. Schauberger was writing in a very particular time and place — German-speaking central Europe between the wars — and in that milieu, "subtle formative energies" was not a fringe idiom but a widely available one. Knowing the context does not make the claims true. It makes the vocabulary legible, and it explains why an Austrian forester with no formal training reached for exactly these words.
Physics had just lost its own ether — and the word survived
The luminiferous ether was mainstream physics for most of the nineteenth century: a subtle medium filling space, through which light propagated. The Michelson–Morley experiment (1887) failed to detect it and special relativity (1905) made it unnecessary. But a word that had carried respectable physics for a century did not simply vanish — it drifted outward, retaining its authority while losing its definition. "Ethericity" is a word borrowed from a house that had just been demolished.
Vitalism was a living scientific position, not yet a slur
Hans Driesch's entelechy and Henri Bergson's élan vital (1907) were serious attempts to explain why organisms behave as wholes rather than as mechanisms — arguments taken seriously in university philosophy and biology departments well into the 1920s. Schauberger's insistence that living systems obey a different logic from machines sits squarely in that tradition. It only looks fringe in retrospect.
Rudolf Steiner was Austrian, contemporary, and everywhere
This is the closest and most consequential parallel. Steiner (1861–1925) — Austrian, hugely influential in German-speaking Europe — taught of "etheric formative forces" shaping living matter, and in 1924 gave the agriculture lectures that founded biodynamic farming: cosmic rhythms, preparations buried in horns, soil as a living organism. Schauberger's fertility claims, his suspicion of chemical agriculture and his vocabulary of formative energies all echo a framework that was already circulating widely in his own language and country.
And another Austrian was doing the same thing next door
Wilhelm Reich (1897–1957) — Austrian, near-exact contemporary — proposed orgone, a universal life-energy accumulated by living things and blocked by modern conditions. He and Schauberger never collaborated, and the resemblance is the point: two Austrians of the same generation independently reached for a subtle universal energy to explain the difference between the living and the mechanical. That convergence tells you about the intellectual water they were both swimming in.
It cuts both ways, and the codex should say so. It counts in his favour that he was not fabricating a private cosmology but working in a shared idiom — the ethericities are what a careful, observant, self-taught man would have called these effects, given the words available to him in 1930s Austria. Judging him for not using a vocabulary that did not yet exist is unfair.
It counts against him that the same milieu produced orgone, biodynamics and a great deal else that has not survived testing, and that a shared idiom is not evidence — four people reaching for the same unmeasurable force is a fact about their culture, not about nature. The context explains the words. It does not validate them. What validates the parts that survive is that each one turned out to point at something an instrument could later find.
One water, three signatures: the folk taxonomy decoded
Here is the interpretation that makes the three -gens click into place. Schauberger was not inventing three energies at random — without the vocabulary to name them, he was carving water's "extra" properties into the three domains science itself uses: the biological, the chemical, and the physical. The ethericities are a folk taxonomy of the three ways water is more than H₂O.

Seen this way, the framework stops being three invented essences and becomes something defensible: an early, intuitive recognition that water's behaviour is governed by three independent axes that chemistry alone doesn't capture. A hydrologist today would not say "fructigens" — but she would absolutely agree that biological fertility, chemical composition, and electrical state are three separate, real, measurable things a water sample carries. Schauberger's error was reification: turning three categories of property into three substances. His insight was the carving itself — and the carving was sound.
The charity has limits, and they must be named. Schauberger did not treat the -gens as loose metaphors for solubility and charge — he treated them as literal, gendered, quasi-living forces with fertility, will, and moral valence ("eternally female," "eviscerates the soil"). That is where the framework leaves science entirely. Real water quality is a bundle of independent measurable variables; the ethericities collapse that bundle into three animate essences. Compressing a dozen real properties into three mythic ones is not a simplification a physicist can accept — it is a re-enchantment, beautiful and clarifying as poetry, misleading as mechanism. The properties are real. The three living energies are not.
Water quality is genuinely separable from chemical formula; dissolved gases, minerals, redox, pH and microbial ecology all vary independently; flowing water generates real electrokinetic charge; metal turbomachinery alters water's state. Several phenomena used in this interpretation are measurable, even though the three -gens are not.
The engineering rule that survives: never judge water by chemistry alone — temperature, motion, handling and history all shape what water does. As a working heuristic for anyone managing water, this is sound and non-obvious, and it is the practical gift of the whole framework.
That these properties are three discrete, gendered, quasi-living "ethericities" that accumulate and discharge as subtle energies. No instrument detects them; the framework is unfalsifiable. A vivid mythic encoding of real effects — valuable as intuition, inadmissible as physics.
Coats quotes Schauberger’s Goethean language: the fecund, carbone-bearing matter is the “Eternally Feminine,” fertilised by the male principle, oxygen.

Coats is careful: “carbones” is Schauberger’s own category for receptive matter — not the element on the periodic table.
